Year 6 Overseas Residential

Respect & remembrance is a cause close to our hearts at St Wilfrid's.

We have our own statue of remembrance on the school grounds and we raise considerable funds for the Royal British Legion each Autumn term.

On Remembrance Sunday, we lay a wreath at the statue outside our church and then our school family joins in the town's parade. We march up to the cenotaph on Berry Lane, lay another wreath in honour of the fallen from our town and take part in the two-minute silence at 11am and accompanying service.

Every September, in our second week back, we take our Y6 children on an overseas residential to France and Belgium.

In Belgium, we visit the World War I Museum and park at Passchendale. We lay a wreath and take part in the 8pm ceremony, which takes place every day 365 days a year, at the Menin Gate, in the town of Ypres, Belgium. Whilst on this residential, we also visit the city of Bruges and take a canal tour.

In France, we go to the beach and visit a French market, to practise our foreign language skills, in the town of Le-Touquet-Paris Plage. One year, the England Rugby Union Team were based there for the Rugby World Cup, and we watched a training session and met the star players.

In France, we also visit battle sites of World War I and visit cemeteries, including Loch Nagar Crater, Beaumont Hamel and the Thiepval Memorial.
