Tom Palmer – Our School’s Patron of Reading

The author Tom Palmer has just confirmed that he is so excited to agree to be St Wilfrid’s patron of reading for the next school year 2017-18!!!  See below for a report on Tom’s latest visit…

“That’s the best application by far. And I loved your school when I came last year. I’d love to be patron of reading at a school like yours!” Tom Palmer.

Tom shares many of our loves at St Wilf’s; particularly sport, history and reading.

We are delighted to be working alongside him on many exciting projects involving these shared passions in the school year 2017-2018.

Tom is equally delighted here’s what he said at the start of our new school year;

“I wanted to become Patron of Reading at St Wilfrid’s because of the massive enthusiasm there is for reading at the school. I dropped in recently when the school offered to help me with a book idea. They were honest, intelligent and passionate about books. And that’s the teachers as much as the children. It stood out for me. So, I’m really looking forward to coming into the school again in February.”

We were thrilled to welcome Tom back into our school in February 2018.  This was his second visit to our school, but his first since becoming our Patron of Reading.

All the children in school had the opportunity to work with Tom during the day and listen to him, as he enthused everyone about reading and writing.  Tom described himself as an author, football fan and a reader, whose life was changed through reading about football.

As our Patron of Reading, Tom was thrilled to see our new library shelves, especially the one dedicated to his books.  He was even more impressed that most of his books were out on loan to the children of our school.

During his sessions with each class, Tom talked about his exciting life as an author and how his books are created from drafting to final product.  The children came up with some great questions for Tom and were fascinated by the level of research and planning which goes into his books.

Our children have been doing a lot of work on writing and Tom has inspired them to continue to develop their interest in this.  Tom even worked with the Year 6 class on planning a story based around the Ribchester Helmet.  Watch this space for the amazing stories they developed following Tom’s input.

Lots of children bought Tom’s books on the day, and many more children brought their own books from home for Tom to sign.

The feedback from all of the children was incredible and both they (and Tom) had a wonderful day!

Everyone is looking forward to working with Tom again in the near future.
