Longridge Cluster Armistice Project

Following on from our first cluster production WWII inspired ‘Forget Me Not’ in 2013, this school year the Longridge cluster of schools worked together on a new show marking the centenary of the end of WWI in 2018. Click here to view video footage of ‘Forget Me Not’.

At Preston Guild Hall on Remembrance Day itself, 11th November 2018,  our children took part in the Longridge cluster school’s showstopper ‘Armistice’ based on the events of World War I.

The ‘Longridge Cluster Schools’ Armistice Project’ was strongly community orientated, and built up a huge portfolio of work including an archive of family stories and artefacts from relatives who served or participated in the First World War.

The community worked together to knit 19,240 poppies the number of men killed on July 1st 1916 at the Battle of the Somme and used these to create a huge visual image as part of the commemoration. We made silhouettes of soldiers –  whose name appears on the various war memorials around Longridge and surrounding villages. These were installed in our communities to bring these long dead men back into the public consciousness.

The children were taught about the conflict and produced work through subjects of English, Maths, Science, History, Music, Geography, Art, Dance, Drama, Design Technology, Computing, RE and PSHE. We looked back at the conflict through the prism of 100 years exploring causes, consequences and what we can learn from its legacy.

The project culminated in two performances on November 11th 2018 at Preston Guild Hall where over 500 children and 100 adults told the story of the Great War through music, dance and drama “Armistice”. This hugely significant milestone of the centenary of the end of the Great War was commemorated and celebrated, bringing different generations together and most importantly informing future generations about the struggle and sacrifice made by our forbearers for our future, so that their memory was kept burning bright and not forgotten.
