Phonics information

At St Wilfrid’s we teach a phonics session for all the children in the Foundation stage (EYFS) and Key Stage 1 every day. We use many of the resources from the Read, Write, Inc Scheme to assist us teach high quality phonics lessons. Our lessons teach children to decode words by splitting them into individual phonemes (sounds). These phonemes are then blended together to create the whole world.  They are taught that sounds are represented by graphemes and use these to write words. Spelling is not focused upon initially.  As long as the word is phonetically plausible it is accepted.

It is therefore important that phonemes are taught and pronounced as they are used in words.

If any parents, carers or members of the public wish to know more about our phonics or reading schemes or our curriculum in general please feel free to contact school.
